The basics of teleprompters

Why use a teleprompter?
A teleprompter allows for eye contact with an audience and eliminates the need for memorizing or using cue cards. A teleprompter helps you get the shot quickly -- an important goal when working with busy executives or expensive actors.

How does it work?
The script is entered manually or electronically into a teleprompting program. The computer outputs a video signal of the script to a monitor or monitors. Then, depending on the setup required, the script is seen by the speaker in the monitor directly or the image is reversed in the monitor and then reflected via a one-way mirror mounted above the monitor. Several lines of script are visible and a skilled operator scrolls the script at the speaker's pace.

For instance, for a camera-mounted system the teleprompter consists of a camera plate, a monitor and a one-way mirror with hood. The plate mounts to the camera's tripod and the camera is mounted to the top of the plate. The monitor is attached to the plate in a way that positions it just below the camera lens. The mirror is above the monitor at a 45 degree angle and in front of the camera lens. This allows the speaker to read lines while still looking directly into the camera lens.

Where can it be used?
A teleprompter can be used just about anywhere: on stage, in an office or studio, even outside in bright sunlight. It can also be used in many different ways. The most common setup for video is on-camera, but teleprompting monitors can be mounted off-camera as well. And for live events, if you don't want a presidential system onstage -- perhaps you won't be working with a podium -- then there are other options: floor monitors, projection screens, even monitors hung from the ceiling. I'll work with you and your A/V partners to find the best solution for you and your clients.
